OpenSocial Foundation: OpenSocial is now officially an open standard, and Yahoo! joins!

March 25th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Google, Yahoo! and MySpace announced today the creation of the OpenSocial foundation to manage the OpenSocial specifications. The specifications will live on opensocial.org.

Many of the social sites I have been talking to in the past few months have been asking questions about the openness of the specification and its governance model: this should answer their questions. The foundation is modeled after the OpenID foundation.

Also Yahoo! is now joining OpenSocial, which is an excellent news.

A few years down the road we’ll look back at the birth of OpenSocial as a major disruptive technology, a key value enabler at a macro-economic level. Just like AdSense ensures the profitability of millions of businesses, OS will allow scores of social apps / site to flourish. Way to go OS team!
